We often see a lot of confusion about the difference between Wireless Internet, Satellite Internet, and Wi-Fi. For the next three Wednesdays, we’ll briefly look at these terms. This week –
Wireless
Wireless Internet is an Internet signal sent over radio waves. The signal is sent from a radio tower to an antenna situated on the property that needs Internet. In order to work, there needs to be line-of-sight between the tower and the antenna, thought the signal can be bounced around obstructions if the right equipment is in place.
Once the signal reaches the antenna, it generally travels through a cable to reach the spot where you plug in your modem or router. In order to get to the radio tower, it generally traveled over fiber optic or copper cables from the Internet Service Provider’s hub.
One worry people often have is whether or not Wireless Internet is safe. It is. Wireless Internet uses encryption technology that makes it as safe as traditional Internet.
